With CISPA ready for a full vote on April 23 in Washington D.C, debates concerning internet restrictions have gained momentum yet again. The proposed act is seen as a successor to the flurry of internet laws such as SOPA, PIPA and ACTA that have died a slow death amidst worldwide protests.

Whether approved or proposed, these laws have made the lives of netizens no less than miserable. Thankfully, with the help of a VPN, they can look beyond the censorship nightmares.Private Internet Access is expected to be the best of the buys in this regard.

About CISPA

  • The Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (in short, CISPA) was introduced by Rep. Mike Rodgers (R-Mich.) and Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-Md.) last year.
  • If approved, it will empower government agencies and businesses with the right to share information about cyber-threats in secret.
  • The proposed law introduces modifications to the National Security Act of 1947.
  • The proposal includes, amongst others, details regarding the “threat or misappropriation” of information owned by the government or private businesses, including intellectual property and “efforts to degrade, disrupt or destroy” vital networks.
  • However the Act’s co-sponsors consider its comparisons with SOPA as baseless, as the former does not empower the government with the right to block websites or shut them down completely.
  • Moreover, they have also ruled out any involvement of authorities in the intrusion of one’s personal computer. However, the digital rights advocacy group, Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) owns a different view point.
  • It states the broad language of CISPA could easily be interpreted to allow companies like Facebook and Google, as well as Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to trap the private data of online users and hand it over to the government.
  • In a blog post, EFF said, “the language is so broad it could be used as a blunt instrument to attack websites like The Pirate Bay or WikiLeaks.”.

About ACTA

  • The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) also serves a very similar purpose with minor differences.
  • It bestows the power in the hands of corporations to block any content from appearing on the internet that they find to be reflecting their business in wrong spirit.
  • Alongside, they may  also be able to take action against anyone who is downloading, sharing or accessing copyrighted works.
  • Its implementation would have certainly meant that if found guilty of violating the laws, the accused could be forced to bear severe punishments as well, including imprisonment
  • The act was about to be approved in the European Parliament earlier this year in January 2012, but was unable to find any ground, thankfully.
  • Miffed with failure, the members of the European commission put all the blame on the worldwide protests moved by intellectuals and netizens via social media.
  • The European Commissioner, Karel De Gucht, said in one of his interviews that he holds the high intensity protests over the internet responsible for the debacle. He said that the campaign forced many European State Union Heads and Governments to postpone ACTA’s ratification.

The role of VPN

The incidents of all such censorship acts have now become a part of life.

In order to satisfy their individual goals, mega corporations and governments are joining forces to introduce  laws that do nothing good, but instead, put a question mark over the freedom of netizens on the internet.

Hence, adopting a suitable alternative such as Virtual Private Network (VPN) from a service provider would be ideal in such situations.

It would not only thwart the attempts of censorship authorities to intrude into anyone’s personal life but would also enable the internet users to access their craved websites freely, without any restrictions.
