The measures that government adopts are too few to combat the cyber felonies in the country, report varied media personalities and researchers.
June27, 2012: The rising incidents of cybercrime are rapidly eating away the important data of net savvy people all round the world with the administrative authorities more or less sitting tight lipped.
It is not that governments do not invest in fighting with the cyber attacks, but considering the volume of harm these crimes cause to an average netizen, all the security concerns are put to margins.
Talking about the UK, the story is no different where cybercrime has become the order of the day and despite rising incidents, the government is spending only nuts to assure so called stiff security measures.
As per the reports published by researchers in England there is literary no comparison between the amount the UK government spends on the anti-virus software and on the steps taken to combat cyber crime in the country.
Moreover, if the research work of scientists from Cambridge University is to be believed, much more work is desired towards putting a halt to the cybercrimes instead of encouraging the situations ripe for crimes to occur.
As per the post from security expert Matthew Finnegan in TechEye’s, “Each year, the country spends US$1 billion on fighting threats, with $170 million going on anti-virus software,”.
He further adds, “This contrasts with $15 million spent on law enforcement. The ‘straightforward conclusion’ that the researchers draw from this is to ‘spend less on defense and more on policing.’”
Brid-Aine Parnell from The Register further carries forward the debate on cyber crime through its post where he said, “ The study, which was started after a request from the Ministry of Defense, also said that the amount of money the UK was losing as a result of cybercrime was being exaggerated,”.
While the information technology is taking a big leap with the changing times, unfortunately it has equally inspired the antisocial elements as well who play their part in a plethora of cyber felonies inclusive of fraud bank transactions, email threats, data theft and intrusion etc.
“As countries scramble to invest in security to minimize cyber-risks, governments want to know how large that investment should be and where the money should be spent”, reacted Ross Anderson, the lead author and Professor of Security Engineering, University of Cambridge’s Computer Laboratory.
These are some of the obvious reactions of the concerned dignitaries that anticipate the occurrence of tragic situation over the cyber world in UK in the coming times, whether or not the authorities are equally worried is still the moot point.
Until the stiff measures won’t be taken, cyber crimes would continue to eat away the economy of the country directly or indirectly. However, there is still much that the commoners can do at their own end, such as installing and configuring a VPN gateway on their computers and cell phones or any other device they use for accessing the internet.
