Senses this move as a mode to make way for accentuated safety and security for its users

May22, 2012: Skype recently announced that it is working on a new tool to log the last known IP address of a user, which is supposedly a serious privacy intrusion matter.

As per the instructions given on Pastebin in the form of codes, the IP address of an online user could be tracked without including the targeted user in the contact lost; merely checking out his general information and log files would be sufficient for the cause.

Skype cites this investigation as a mode to assure higher degree of safety and security for the online users. In an email statement, the Microsoft owned company said, “We are investigating reports of a new tool that allegedly captures a Skype user’s last known IP address.

This is an ongoing, industry-wide issue faced by all peer-to-peer software companies. We are committed to the safety and security of our customers and we are taking measures to help protect them.”

The attempts to investigate the tool started in October last year when Skype acknowledged a research paper that suggested the trick to determine the IP address of its users.

The attempt could well be a matter of achievement for the company but on ground level, the information could not be true and accurate always.

The IP address could be tracked only if it really a genuine one, however those using a masked IP address with the help of VPN would still remain undetected.

TOR or the Onion Router is yet another method that comes handy in hiding the accurate IP address and routes the traffic online with the help of a network of servers spread across the globe in a manner that it remains almost undetected.

Though Skype also utilizes an encrypted mechanism to route the data traffic in the form of peer-to-peer system, but the system is owned privately by the firm and hence is not open for scrutiny.

This has also led the security experts in the industry to be more cautious of its move to investigate the new tool.
