Panama Papers Reveal Deeds of The Criminal Elite

In one of the biggest revelations to date, close to 11 million documents totaling a colossal 2.6 Terabytes of data were leaked from the database of Mossack Fonseca, a secretive Panama based law firm. Documents identify severe crimes and tax evasion by prominent world leaders, heads of state, business persons, athletes & sportspersons, and celebrities.

40 years of shocking documents received by German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung one year ago (who later disseminated the documents to 110 news agencies in 78 countries & the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists) have revealed incredible cases of money laundering, dodging sanctions and tax evasion. Over 40 years of criminal activity and Mossack Fonseca have never even been accused let alone implicated in wrongdoings.

The documents identify 12 current & former heads of states in addition to 61 family members of these personalities. Prominent names include

  • Iceland’s Prime Minister Sigmundur Gunnlaugson,
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin,
  • Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Shareef,
  • President of South Africa Jacob Zuma,
  • Syrian President Bashar Assad,
  • and Chinese President Xi Jinping,
  • Ukraine President Petro Poroshenko,
  • Prime Minister of Iraq Ayad Allawi, and
  • Saudi Arabian monarch King Salman, amongst many others

Revealing emails point out how Mossack Fonseca assisted clients with services designed specifically to hide wealth earned through legal or “illegal means”. Most of the tactics pursued by Mossack Fonseca have been deemed a ‘direct’ breach of international regulations setup to eliminate tax evasion and money laundering, according to the BBC.

When asked to comment, Mossack Fonseca communicated the following:

“Your allegations that we provide structures supposedly designed to hide the identity of the real owners, are completely unsupported and false.

“We do not provide beneficiary services to deceive banks. It is difficult, not to say impossible, not to provide banks with the identity of final beneficiaries and the origin of funds.”

Mossack Fonseca was founded in 1977 and is headquartered in Panama with offices established in known tax haven countries including Switzerland, the British Virgin Islands and Seychelles. The firm focuses on consulting with the rich elite aiding them to setup offshore & tax exempt entities to launder money and evade taxes in the process.

Of all the people in the world the documents reveal a shell company owned by football icon Lionel Messi and his father. Spanish authorities have already begun investigating Messi for tax evasion also making this is a sad day for sport all over the world.

Pakistan’s PM Nawaz Shareef found himself at the center of controversy again with himself and his family members found deeply involved in evading taxes and laundering terror financing. The Pakistani Information minister has this to say on the subject:

Every man has the right to do what he wants with his assets, to throw them in the sea, to sell them, or to establish a trust for them. There is no crime in this in Pakistani law or in international law.
