“The new ISP lets the Kiwis enjoy unrestricted freedom over the Internet; targets Hulu and Netflix among others for availability in New New Zealand”

May31, 2012: For years, countries that have lesser impact on the global economy are mostly treated like back-benchers in a classroom, with little or no attention paid to them. The problem with New Zealand is no different with all the prominent online services such as Hulu, Netflix and more, overlooking it, both at the launching time and even later on.

To help themselves kick out of this second-class customer treatment, the Kiwis are now heading towards a fresh ISP, “Fyx” that came into existence earlier this May. According to Fyx, it offers a “ Global Mode which creates freedom for New Zealand Internet users that doesn’t exist elsewhere,”.

A local newspaper, The Southland Times, gives more insight into the company saying that the new ISP aims to target websites that are yet to become available in the country, such as Hulu, Netflix and several other websites that utilize geo-fencing to block the foreign users from accessing their services.

The ISP is first of its kind in the country to offer the customers this welcome circumvention tool that could go beyond the censorship to let them access all those restricted websites easily.

Though, the use of VPN is a common thing  in New Zealand and the citizens there have been paying for its services since long to by pass the blockades from geo-restricted sites, but with the introduction of this new ISP, the Kiwi online users have definitely found a capable alternative.

The Chief Executive of New Zealand’s Telecommunications Users Association, Paul Brislen also looked impressed by Fyx; talking to the newspaper, he said that its (Fyx) services could help the people save good NZ$50 ($39) on monthly basis.

Commenting on the current plight of the country in context with the inability of its citizens to access the sites that are easily available in big countries Fyx stated, “We all know that New Zealand is the best little country in the world, but sometimes being little means that we get passed over when toys are being handed out. So we decided to FYX the Internet by removing some of the barriers that were getting in the way of great choice.”

However, it remained doubtful about its endeavors to slow down the IP traffic, in one of its tweets: : “A lot more than a VPN. Majority of traffic behaves as normal. Only different when required to be.”

The targeted sites including Netflix and Hulu are strictly against the idea to enable the users access their websites, be it through a VPN, ISP or via any other filter bypassing tool.

According to Hulu, “You may not either directly or through the use of any device, software…bypass…or circumvent any copyright, trademark, or other proprietary notices marked on the Content or any digital rights management mechanism, device, or other content protection or access control measure associated with the Content including geo-filtering mechanisms,”.

Netflix seemed even more straightforward as it said, “You may not circumvent, remove, alter, deactivate, degrade or thwart any of the content protections in the Netflix service”

Despite such hard comments, Fyx maintained that it is yet to find any incident where a VPN service provider has  undergone legal proceedings owing to violation of the policies of Hulu,Netflix or any other similar company.

In addition to the FYX ISP update, it is pretty nimble that VPN has been rewarded as one of the essential tool to bypass censorship from any part of the world and viable to opt it as it not only enable netizen to access their favourite website like Hulu, Netflix etc.

But it also empowered netizen with absolute security as all the traffic passes through encrypted tunnel through VPN. And not only user can access it from one location. But, VPN can be accessible demographically. So, the bottom line is that its a  good sign to have such kind of ISP that can somehow allowing access to geo-restricted website. But nevertheless VPN is still considered to be as much reliable option due to various factors.
