A global media observation group warns of a severe attack on internet freedom in major countries including US and UK due to the hasty legislations they keep on introducing
May07, 2012: The fate of internet liberty is in shambles worldwide including the United States and the United Kingdom, if the study conducted by a reputed global media observation group is to be believed.
The research work carried out by the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) which takes care of freedom for media in 56 countries, indicates that both the transition as well as democratic governments are putting forth steps that are strictly against the freedom of media as well as internet.
While taking to the Guardian in an interview, Dunja Mijatovic, the head of OSCE said that the results of the study on media freedom were “not very rosy”.
Mentioning the plight of the 56 countries that come under the OSCE group, She said, “Governments are trying to restrict or suppress in the interests of security- legislation is very hasty”, and also didn’t refuse the possibility of “witch-hunt in OSCE countries and beyond” against the journalists and bloggers.
She further expressed concerns for the safety of journalists, citing, “Media professionals worry about themselves and their families if they write particular stories or make the wrong social media comments,”.
Mijatovic further added that in the wake of controlling internet, the governments have almost lost their direction.
They are simply obsessed with the idea of online censorships without trying to know its dire consequences that could lead them to face severe criticism ahead.
She says, ”In some parts of the world, the benefits of free speech are not seen, but censorship anywhere is censorship everywhere.”
In her concluding statement, she termed the internet as a capable platform that governments could leverage for the uplifting of society. However, the reality is totally different, they do want the changes to happen “because they want to stay in power.”
In the meantime, the news of United Nations taking over the internet in entirety has been rubbished by the general secretary of the International Telecommunications Union, Dr Hamadoun. I. Toure. He called the reports as “ridiculous” and further asked the people to come forward for rational discussion on the issue instead of glorifying it.
To summarize, the incidents of online censorship have indeed taken many of the world countries in its clutch. In the name of safeguarding moral, religious or traditional values and at times just for the greed of retaining power, they keep on introducing weird censorships now and then.
No doubt it would be a suicidal attempt to fight them standalone, a better alternative would therefore be to use tools to bypass filtering, prominent of them being VPN, Proxy servers or Tor.
Choosing a VPN would be a more feasible option and for that reason we are providing you with the Top VPN providers which will help you in keeping your freedom.
