Since, 16th March, 2011, Not-So-Great authorities of Great Firewall of China have been blocking many VPN services, free email services like Gmail and social networking sites like Twitter in China for reasons like, to prevent middle-east like uprising in China and not enabling Chinese to express their anger at Internet Censorship and Great Firewall in China.
The situation became even more worse when all major VPN providers like 12VPN,
Witopia, StrongVPN, PureVPN, ibVPn, UltraVPN were either completely blocked or faced disruption in different parts of China. Most used VPN Protocols like PPTP & L2TP were reported blocked in China from Friday, 18th March, 2011. Although, amazingly Great Firewall could not restrict few of the Chinese netizens from using the above mentioned blocked services and even blocked protocols, we came across many VPN users, secretly and publicly claiming that they still have access to Witopia VPN, plus PPPT and L2TP VPN protocols. Late night Friday, OpenVPN and SSTP based VPN services were also reported blocked in China. Several VPN services reported heavy refunds to the Chinese customers and many hesitated due to the obvious reason.
Now, when more than 5 days have passed, since VPN services in China are facing problems. Many VPN services have found a way out of these problems, while, several VPN services are still facing issues. Chinese authorities have been blocking the IP addresses of servers of major VPN providers and when the IP addresses of the servers are changed or new servers are recruited, the access is restored. Plus, particular area based servers in USA were also blocked, but users had access to other servers in different areas to restore the VPN connection.
For now, Astrill VPN, as previously reported by Bestvpnservice.com, still is performing the best in Chinese markets with out any blockages and service or speed interruptions. It is offering more than 60 servers and 30 countries around the world for mere 25.95/3 Months (which makes it to 8.65/Month). In addition, another giant in VPN industry, StrongVPN also seems to be performing good in areas of China without any interruptions, however minor service interruptions are reported, but hopefully nothing to worry about. Meanwhile, 12VPN and Witopia are still reported blocked in most parts of China but there are surprises here and there and hopefully these two giants will recover soon from the blockade by GFW.

My VPN (provided by my western university) does have problems in certain places, but when and where seems very random. I can use it in my dorm using the internet wire, but when I tried to use it through a friend’s wireless connection in the same dorm (!) it got blocked. However, two years ago the same VPN worked anywhere in China.
My Gmail account, on the other hand, has had no problems whatsoever in very different parts of China, from Chengdu to Shanghai and from Haerbin to Guilin. I do not think Gmail is being blocked at all. (Unlinke GoogleDocs btw.)

I’ve been in China for a few years, and for the past few years I’ve been compiling a book about the corruption and control of the Chinese government. Then I found a VPN that got me on Facebook and I was addicted to a game for quite some time… now it’s back, I guess I’ll get back to my book…
